My edition is the 1981 Ballantine one which I have owned since that time. And I can tell you that if you read one E. E. Halleran book you will want to read them all. He is that good of a writer of what I call "traditional westerns". They are what you think a western should be--one man facing overwhelming odds with little or no help; a woman in some sort of distress; and mystery enough, and action enough, to keep you turning the pages to find out how it will end. Tom Kendrick returns home to New Mexico after having spent years in the army to claim the tall timber on nearby Spanish Ridge. And only two things become clear upon his arrival--somebody wanted Spanish Ridge and somebody wanted him dead. There is false identity as someone has come before him claiming to be him and after this person dies the widow has claimed the property. A swindle? Cattle are being rustled as well. Is there a connection?
