Southern Fried Rock: Second Helping is a fine compilation for one very simple reason: It represents all of the different genres from which Southern rock sprang as well as those out of which it evolved. This collection features 12 songs from 1973 to 1982, and some are rooted in more than one style, but their main influences are obvious. Elements of pure country are embodied in the Allman Brothers Band's "Ramblin' Man," the Charlie Daniels Band's "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," and the Outlaws' "Hurry Sundown." The stellar "Ramblin' Man" is the oldest song here, which is fitting since the Allman Brothers virtually invented Southern rock. Daniels' sizzler has a novelty element to it, but it's a terrific song. (This is the unedited version with the "son of a bitch" lyric instead of the 1979 single's version that used "son of a gun." My, how times have changed!) The influence of British hard rock is evident on Lynyrd Skynyrd's live, edited hit-single version of the immortal "Free Bird," Blackfoot's "Train, Train," and Molly Hatchet's "Dreams I'll Never See." Molly Hatchet foregoes their usual bluster on this enjoyably tasteful Allman Brothers cover. Top 40 pop is best represented by the Marshall Tucker Band's wonderfully majestic "Heard It in a Love Song" and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' AM-radio gem "Jackie Blue." The impact of soul and R&B on Southern rock is clear on Wet Willie's "Keep on Smilin'" and the Atlanta Rhythm Section's "Imaginary Lover." By the early 1980s, pure Southern rock had smoothed out into catchy AOR. Two perfect examples are 38 Special's "Caught Up in You" and Point Blank's "Nicole."
