Teen idols -- with their injection of classic pop arrangements and melody into rock music -- increasingly held sway, while the style of Elvis Presley circa 1956 was in sharp decline. Vincent, unperturbed, kept cranking out excellent rockers in his established style as though the '50s would never end. To be fair, Sounds Like Gene Vincent reveals a little evolution; a couple of the soft ballads make use of a fairly lush vocal chorus, and the influence of Buddy Holly can be heard in places. But these developments are fleeting, and Crazy Times is a return to no-nonsense rock & roll. Wonderful music, although, from a commercial standpoint, Vincent was doomed.
