I thought this book was very cute. The heroine is the epitome of plucky and never leaves home without her parasol. Even at night. Which is odd, but wise.
Carriger has created a main character who (mostly) wants to follow the rules but sometimes events, and her own nature, take over. It is great fun to watch a determined, quick-witted and brave young woman navigate the mores of alt-Victorian England, including her reactions when she commits a lamentable faux pas.
I can't say much about the mystery that drives the story without risking spoilers, but it unwinds to a conclusion that was horrific enough to keep me reading but without offending my delicate sensibilities.
The only reason I give this a 4/5 rather than a 5/5 is the too-obvious use of Romantic Plot Devices #3 and #4.
Actually, with the charming illustrations it should be a 4.6/5.
