A short entertaining read with some interesting world building. The main character, Cray, is as the title suggests a Sorcerer's Son; shocking I know. That being said he's not real happy about the prospect and decides to go search for his father he has never met. While this might sound like a formulaic fantasy plot, it quickly complicates leaving behind stereotypes. That being said this book very much appeals to readers looking for traditional fantasy. The writing is well-written and clean but still left me with the impression of a rushed writing project .
Pros: The system of magic is unique, being divided into different subsets greatly varying in execution and form from division to division. Interesting characters and plot. Traditional fantasy feel.
Cons: Large portions of the main characters life is seemingly skipped over at random, like a year in arms training. Lacks the fleshed out feel of many other authors. The whole world consists of a handful of characters. If this was a movie their would have been no extras. I found myself half-way through the book looking for something else to read.
