Andy Russell is criminally overlooked amidst higher-profile crooners of the mid-1940s and early '50s. After paying his dues as a vocalist and on-again/off-again percussionist with Johnny Richardsand Sonny Dunham among others, his first break came during a stint with Alvino Rey. This led to Russell hosting his own "Old Gold Show" as well as recording with the newly formed Capitol Records. He had a handful of memorable hits, several of which are included on Songs for Lovers Only (2004), featuring the artist's contributions to the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) programs Mail Call and Personal Albums. Significant sides abound on this anthology, such as "Magic Is Moonlight" and "My First, My Last, My Only." The latter also boasts the Pied Pipers who join in for "Don't Blame Me." Russell scored big on "I Can't Begin to Tell You" from The Dolly Sisters and it ultimately became a signature selection for Russell. He followed that up with another show tune, this time "They Say It's Wonderful" from Annie Get Your Gun. Initially, " I Cried for You" was issued by Capitol during the holiday season of 1947 and the emotive number was backed with Russell's reading of the title track from the film Easter Parade (1949).
