For the 2020 concert, squeezed in between two waves of the coronavirus in Austria, Valery Gergiev returned for his fourth evening as conductor. Given his track record as a specialist in weighty operas and Russian symphonies, one might well wonder whether the more popular entries on the program here would really be in his wheelhouse, but there are reasons Gergiev is one of the most popular conductors of the day, and they are on full display here.
