Kipling's memoir is wonderful reading -- he was a terrific, prolific writer, remember? He presents himself as a kind, grateful man, who gives credit to someone else for everything he achieved. Kipling was a "Raj orphan", those children whose parents were with the British Civil Service who sent their (very young) children back to England to be educated (and also they wouldn't grow up with the children of the people their parents ruled?) At any rate, Kipling was not soured by the experience, as were so many of the orphans, and he grew up to be a happy man. I am sorry the memoir is so short, as I could have read it all winter.
