MEMORIAL FOR A HOSPITAL IN CHINA. 71 3. As there exist great extremes of heat and cold (varying from 11SF or 46C in summer to 14F or-IOC in winter) the hospital should be built to meet these requirements. The land in Tientsin is unusually flat, water being found less than four feet beneath the surface. Coal is abundant and cheap, and the hospital could with advantage supply its own electric lighting and steam heating. 4. The staff of the hospital should consist of a superintendent, one chief surgeon, one chief physician, one pharmacist (if possible, an analytical chemist, to study some of the more important drugs used by native physicians), and a head nurse--all Americans--together with a junior staff of Chinese assistant doctors, dressers, and nurses. 5. The hospital should be controlled by a board of trustees appointed by the donor. Until such a time as the trustees consider ripe for the self-support of the institution or its being passed over to Chinese management, the hospital should be built, maintained and controlled by the donor through the board of trustees. We feel confident that such a hospital is urgently needed in China, and that it will not only benefit the sick and suffering, but also create a true and healthy spirit among Chinese of the aims and ideals of Western medical science in preventing as well as treating diseases.
