Solo is an attractive recital, well recorded by Warner Classics' Parlophone division and aimed squarely at the middle of the road. McCarthy draws on a variety of arrangements dating back as far as Liszt's time, avoiding such standards of the genre as Brahms' transcription of the Bach Chaconne in favor of tunes ingeniously placed amidst figuration that surrounds the vocal line. What you get is an album that has a bit less razzle-dazzle than others in the field, but that is more listenable to those wanting a pleasant hour of melodies.
