Perch??? che lo scrittore veronese in realt??? non abbia mai varcato i confini nazionali ??? cosa nota, forse lo ??? meno il fatto che, per preparare la stesura dei suoi romanzi si calasse per giorni, settimane, mesi, nel vorace studio di atlanti, monografie, cronache e resoconti che tanto affascinavano la sua avida mente. E si vede, o meglio si legge. E le sue opere non hanno niente a che invidiare ai grandi "avversari" del genere: da Verne a Hugo, da London a Melville. Questo gli valse grandi riconoscimenti dalla critica? Ma nemmeno per idea. Gli intellettuali gli riservarono, e in realt??? ancora gli riservano, il trattamento che tocca a tutti quelli che vendono, e magari osano farlo con libri "per ragazzi". Nessuna gloria insomma per il primo scrittore di largo consumo italiano, almeno dentro le antologie. E nemmeno troppi soldi in realt???. Che, a dire il vero, Salgari dilapidava (principalmente, poverino, per curare la moglie), arrivando a fare tanti debiti da dire che proprio lui, che con i suoi libri faceva viaggiare tutti per il mondo, era costretto a stare inchiodato a una scrivania tutto il giorno a scrivere, o dentro una biblioteca a fare ricerche.
