The title of this paper referred to the challenge of learning a new language (Academic English) while simultaneously mastering content. This double-edged challenge is still quite relevant, however, experts in the field have more recently underscored that the challenges faced by today's multilingual learners go well beyond the academic sphere. Perhaps more than any other subgroup of students, multilingual learners also suffered exponential harm in the early days of the pandemic. Aside from losing essential ELD supports, many of these children -- particularly those who resided in multigenerational households -- experienced loss of family members. A disproportionately large number of MLs have parents who are employed in essential service positions; in such cases, not only was the risk of infection to other members of the household higher but these children often didn't receive the family oversight and support that their more affluent peers had access to. In the face of such adversity, it comes as no surprise that the rates of childhood trauma are higher than ever among the ML population"--
