Lauren Emersonââ?¬â?¢s picture book ââ?¬Å"Smudgesââ?¬Â? opens in a grade school classroom as each student in her class is asked to decorate a puzzle piece with something that makes them unique. The students will use these to decorate their school room once they have finished the decorations. Unfortunately, our heroine Haley is a bit stumped on what makes her unique in a room full of kids from other countries, who speak multiple languages, have bright red hair, etc.
The story arc traces Haleys initial fears and frustrations of trying to figure out what exactly makes her special and different from her classmates. Older readers will notice the excellent foreshadowing and payoff as the story unfolds, while younger readers can appreciate the storys gentle tone as Haley finds her center. The audience for this book will be charmed by the illustrations of Kim Solderberg and will admire the thoughtful way that the story unfolds to celebrate what makes Haley unique.
After the story wraps up, there is a nice little series of questions to ask the audience to pinpoint how they stand out, what makes them special, and how we can better appreciate and celebrate our own individual differences.
I was familiar with Kim Soderbergââ?¬â?¢s work from her earlier picture book ââ?¬Å"Night, Night Farmââ?¬Â? wherein each farm animal is bid goodnight as they cosy up in their individual beds and berths, so if there are any readers of that book looking for more by this illustrator, ââ?¬Å"Smudgesââ?¬Â? is an excellent option. One of the things that stood out to me immediately was the cover, where Soderberg made the title purposefully smudged and messy, yet still perfectly legible. I thought the title was a nice touch and the soft brown color made for a less harsh tone than pencil black would have been, so kudos to that art choice.
Overall, Lauren Emersonââ?¬â?¢s ââ?¬Å"Smudgesââ?¬Â? is a nice story that I highly recommend, especially for southpaws. This is a good book for broaching the subject of differences and teaching kids to sympathize with people who might be a little different, or even a lot different, than themselves!
