The Grand Dominion Jazz Band, founded in 1992, celebrated their 15th anniversary with this fine release (their fourth for the Stomp Off label). Five of the group's original members (trumpeter Bob Jackson, trombonist Jim Armstrong, Gerry Green on clarinet and alto, pianist Bob Pelland, and bassist Mike Duffy) are joined by drummer Mike McCombe and the band's banjoist, Jim Marsh. Although this CD is nearly 72 minutes long, there are just a dozen pieces featured, for most of the performances clock in between five and a half and seven minutes, with plenty of stretching out by the fine soloists and the exuberant ensembles; Armstrong has five vocals while Jackson sings on "Oh Lord, It Is I?." The emphasis is on obscurities, with the highlights including "Smiles," "Fair and Square," a swinging "Brahms Lullaby," and "Sentimental Gentleman From Georgia." Hot trad jazz. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
