All this time we were enjoying a soft, balmy air, the sweetest that can be imagined, the sun being very hot, but the heat tempered by the proximity to this gigantic mass of ice. The next day we visited the Glacier du Bossons, attended by the same guide as before. Leaving our car and mules at the village near the foot, we walked through fields till we reached a hut with the high-sounding name of "Pavilion des Pyramides," for from this spot the wonderful pyramids of ice so striking on this glacier are seen. They are formed by the cracking of the body of the ice, where the glacier suddenly bends over a steeper part of the mountain side, and are from this spot seen in profile, looking like a set of gigantic and grotesque china vases of various shapes, from twenty to sixty feet in height, arranged on the top of the moraine which separated us from them, for we had not come to the foot of the glacier, but had ascended one side. The sun was shining brightly upon these pyramids, casting deep shadows, and greatly increasing the azure blue of the hollows. It is impossible to convey a clear idea of this picture to those who have never been in Switzerland, for there is nothing like it in Nature, except perhaps scenes in the arctic regions.
