Excerpt from Sketch of the History of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture: Prepared for the Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Its Foundation At the meeting held on March 7, 1786, the minute book discloses a variety of actions that foreshadow the broad interest that this Society was to take in matters of public importance. Mr. Bordley submits plans and description of a seed drill to plant wheat seed in clusters or clumps. Colonel George Morgan suggests the expediency of establishing fairs for cattle. A committee of three is appointed to examine the laws of Penn sylvania respecting roads and to report their opinion of the best mode of providing for their effectual and permanent repair. It is interesting to note the attendance at these early meetings. Five, six or seven was the usual number present, even when important measures were under discussion. On November 7, 1786, when two members of the British Parliament were present, eighteen members of the Society marked a high-water attendance.
