My reason for adding a biographical sketch is that his work, though easily comprehensible to his countrymen, would be difficult for English readers to understand without some knowledge of the circumstances in which it was written. As for Le'rmontov and his masterpiece, they are both too well known to need any help from me. I include this version of the famous Song of Kalashnikov because making it has given me so much pleasure that I hope others may find pleasure in reading it.
