The most respected interpreter of what came to be known as the Great American Songbook didn't believe in the practice himself, as he preferred to build albums around an emotional or musical thematic experience. For once, record company greed in rehashing old material into "new" albums makes sense because the urbane, literate, and cynical songs of Rodgers & Hart fit Sinatra like a glove and many of the standards included here are among the finest ever recorded. Lorenz Hart was famous for his witty but downbeat point of view and while with Capitol Records, Sinatra cut the definitive version of such classic songs as "It Never Entered My Mind," "Glad to Be Unhappy," and "I Wish I Were in Love Again" (Sinatra's dexterous phrasing on this number is amazing; nobody else has ever cracked the complex marriage of melody, lyric, and sentiment in such lines as, "When love congeals/It soon reveals/The faint aroma of performing seals" the way he has). While the majority of the tracks on this collection are culled from his Capitol albums, this disc includes selections from the soundtrack to Pal Joey and one previously unreleased number, a delicate ballad reading of "Where or When" that is sheer perfection until it reaches a bombastic conclusion.
