This set is drawn largely from Driftwood's first two albums for RCA Victor Records, 1958's Jimmie Driftwood Sings Newly Discovered Early American Folk Songs (newly discovered in the sense that he wrote all of the songs on the original LP) and 1959's The Wilderness Road, with a few other tracks of similar feel added in as well. His two most famous songs are here, "Battle of New Orleans," based on the melody line to the old fiddle tune "The 8th of January," which celebrated the British defeat at the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815, and was a big radio hit for Johnny Horton in 1959, and "Tennessee Stud," which was a hit for Eddy Arnold and has consequently been done in fine versions by Doc Watson and many others. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
