I purchased this book as a gift for my son, who had reluctantly loaned out his paperback copy. He considers it one of the best novels he has ever read.

SILVERLOCK
Silverlock is the story of one Clarence Shandon , a thirty something man who is lost at sea and is washed up on the shores of the Commonwealth . This bored , cynical , useless and selfish man undergoes a change as he travels through the land of mythical heroes and villains accompanied by Golias , both mentor , guide and example . Apart from being a rattling good yarn , employing what must be one of the first antiheroes in the genre (This was published in 1949 , remember) the book is absolutely stuffed with every mythological hero and villain you can recall , and a lot that I wager you cannot . All right , these references all come from North America and Europe , but within that category the hackneyed phrase ?rich tapestry? is heartily deserved . You could say that the moral is that literature improves you .You might as well say that Hamlet was a depressed person ! This book is so much more than that , and those who love it really love it . I?m sorry to say that although Myers wrote other books , he only wrote one other fantasy 32 years later , and that - perhaps predictably - does not have the joy of Silverlock . Treasure this one if you can get it
