After spending years acting in ââ?¬Å"scriptedââ?¬Â? minor roles as an additional side character in the script of her life, Skylar Lynn, an aspiring Hollywood actress, is off to follow her childhood dream of being a playwright and actor. Her dreams compel her to follow the silver lights, the spirit within her, and pursue her ambition of becoming a ââ?¬Å"Star.ââ?¬Â? Sheââ?¬â?¢s learning to follow the silver lights and has her first role in her written ââ?¬Å"unscriptedââ?¬Â? screenplay, ââ?¬Ë?The City of Dreams,ââ?¬â?¢ as the exotic dancer ââ?¬Ë?Soleil.ââ?¬â?¢ Given her difficult part in her current screenplay with the rich and scandalous nightlife of clubs, and business politics, how difficult would it be for Skylar or Soleil to attain her ultimate desire of creating and acting out her role in the script of ââ?¬Ë?Hollywood Dreams?ââ?¬â?¢
The drama Silver Lights by Michelle Lynn pays tribute to the performing arts world. The book also pays homage to those dreams in the ââ?¬Ë?playground of dreamsââ?¬â?¢ from childhood that went unfulfilled, either due to oneââ?¬â?¢s life conditions or a setback in following the guidance of the silver light. There is a lot of symbolism in the book that the reader can interpret as they relate to their own experiences and understanding of dreams. Silver lights may refer to the inner spirit that motivates a person to realize his worth and push themselves to fulfill their obliterated dreams. The book implies that the light is always present, lying dormant only for the looker to be alert enough to notice it. Moreover, the light can also serve as an indie voice, inspiring artists to live their passion instead of living as a ââ?¬Å"surviving artist,ââ?¬Â? relying on the sour apple representing harsh realities of big cities that lure millions to live the sweet life they desire.
Silver Lights is written in the style of a screenplay and heavily borrows symbols and imagery from the world of theatre and arts. However, I feel that the story outline is disorganized, which makes the books plot a little perplexing. Skylar is portrayed in the screenplay as the author of her own lifes screenplay, with her actions driving her script, including assigned roles, scenes, and dialogues. The lines are blurred between reality and the character in the screenplay allowing the reader to experience the fluid nature that Skylar exists in.
This unconventional book has a brilliant concept and a unique approach and expression. The books structure creates mystery and leaves the reader pondering over the life of Skylar. The characters of the screenplay are presented to reflect either the struggles or hopes of artists or, in the case of men, the desire for physical pleasures and power.
Silver Lights will appeal to readers who enjoy action, romance, and drama with depths of symbolism and imagery, which exudes originality and deep thought.
