Fiddler and composer Yair Dalal is a contemporary Israeli musician and promotes a progressive politics by fusing Arabian and Jewish sounds together in his music. Oud (Middle Eastern lute), sitar, guitar, violin and clarinet provide the melody and harmonies on these mostly instrumental compositions. A vibrant rhythm is formed from African, Indian and Middle Eastern percussion. Jewish and Arabian cultures have historically mixed amicably in parts of Spain, and from this musically rich golden age of Spain is drawn "Adon Haslihot." The title track is more purely Jewish, recalling their liturgical repertoire. In "Trance," a Turkish folk tune is fused with some bars of klezmer. Often, tracks are ornamented with sighing or chanting female vocalizations. A magnificent desert tradition, born of ancient heritages and expansive, encompassing, daunting landscapes and the inviting glow of cheery tent gathering is conjured in Dalal's recording. In calling for peace and cooperation, while promoting beauty, creation and art, Yair Dalal proves himself not only a hopeful visionary, but a perceptive interpreter of the musical traditions of his people and his neighbors.
