Siege at Dien Bien Phu is an historically accurate depiction of the the battle that ended French colonial rule in Vietnam. A rewrite of the novel "First a Torch", accepted by the French Foreign Legion as part of their official history in Vietnam, the book, and title, now better illustrates the events of the siege. The 14,000 French soldiers in the battle faced over 50,000 Viet Minh. Only about 3,000 French soldiers survived the battle and the subsequent internment.

A remarkable piece of writing. Although a fictional account, all the facts are historically accurate. Unusual is the fact that the story is told from from both the French and the Viet Minh side and no judgements are made. The author is not interested in politics but rather in the lives of common soldiers in a tough business. A bonus is the amount of information one learns as bout Viet Nam, its people and its culture. The historical figures, like Colonel de Castries, General Giap, and Major Biegard, are brought to life as functioning, thinking, and feeling people with a voice rather than ridged historical cut-outs.
