A very fine copy with pictorial dust jacket. Complete history of the Mare Island naval shipyard at Vallejo, California, established in 1854 by David Farragut. The appendices include a complete roster of the navy yard's commandants and a listing of type, hull no. and date launched of the 513 ships built there. Laid into this copy are four first-day-covers for the launching of nuclear submarines built at Mare Island: SSN Sargo, first West Coast nuclear submarine commissioned (1958); USS Halibut, first nuclear powered, guided missile submarine commissioned (1959; two copies); USS Kamehameha nuclear submarine commissioned (1965); Theodore Roosevelt, nuclear submarine commissioned (1959).
