It was issued at that time in a double album set covering the entire concert, which also included a contemporary work, Olli Kortekangas' Migrations, as well as a choral-orchestral version of Sibelius' Finlandia, Op. 26. The concert had a satisfying coherence, and apparently the reason for BIS' Kullervo-only reissue is that the original, at a full two-CD price, was costly for many listeners. At any rate, the listener enamored of Vänskä's approach has several choices: this reading is not dramatically different from his 2001 version with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, also on BIS. The slow movement, "Kullervo's Youth," comes in at 19 minutes plus on both versions, four full minutes slower than on the 2019 recording by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Hannu Lintu.
