Shark Girl was a wonderfully written story about Jane, a fifteen year old girl who gets attacked by a shark. There is no gore, just the raw emotion of a young girl trying to make sense of a tragedy. It is told through poems that she writes as she slowly struggles to recover. Also included are letters, telephone conversations and newspaper clippings. Although this story is fictional, it is written in a way that makes you feel the character is real. The book is divided into three parts to show the transitions Jane makes in the story. I found that this book is not only about recovering from a shark attack, it is about overcoming a seemingly impossible challenge. Jane was a gifted artist, who now has to deal with a shattered dream as well as a lost arm. Some parts of the book are difficult to read because of the pain and sadness Jane describes. Others are extremely inspirational as faces her challenges with courage.
I did not expect a book told mostly through poems and letters could be so powerful. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to everyone. Once I began I could not stop until I finished. It is a quick read, but it stays with you for a long time.
