This book brings together Patricia F. Carini's concept of the developing child as a "maker of works" and M.M. Bakhtin's theory of language as "hero" to re-examine how we have defined and researched early written language development. Through a collection of five essays and a documentary account of one young writer, Himley explores fundamental questions about development, language use and learning, and phenomenological reading or description as a possible interpretive methodology in education and research. She demonstrates how to understand writing as the complex semiotic authoring of self and culture enacted through actual moments of concrete language use.

Fine/Fine Dust Jacket. 0-19-506189-6 A FINE as new Hard Cover with Remainder Mark, in Fine Dust Jacket. 234 pages, with index, references and notes. This pioneering work brings together Patricia F. Cabini's concept of the developing child as a "maker of works" and M.M. Bakhtin's theory of language as "hero" to re-examine how early written language development has been defined and researched. Through a collection of five essays and a documentary account of one young writer, Himley explores fundamental questions about development, language use and learning, and phenomonological reading or description as a possible interpretive methodology in education and research. She demonstrates how to understand writng as the complex semiotic authoring of self and culture enacted through actual moments of concrete language use. Carini's framework is built on a key intellectual move: the redefinition of children's writings as "works". Himley explores how Carini uses this term to claim that projects and artifacts of all kinds, from crayon drawings by children to letters and diaries by adults are the objectified works of the human mind, enabled through cultural practices of signification. Himley then locates Carini's work more explicitly within Bakhtin's social theory of language, emphasizing how in development language itself works as an active and generative territory, full of multiple voices and conflicting worldviews. When approached this way, children's texts become a shared "territory", a shared semiotic space, in which writer, reader, and language itself dwell and participate in the making of meaning(s).
