I read this many years ago and I was ready to reread it. I enjoy reading about the time period that this takes place and about India. I found that this time around it was more helpful to read this book before "The Far Pavillions" by the same author. She did originally write this book first. The characters are very compelling and the story very involving. truly a very fine read. Boston,MA

One of my favorite books
This is the best novel about India during the British Raj that I have ever read. The characters are well developed. The story is exciting and, believe it or not, even relevant. It's not just a good romance; it's a story about tolerance and intolerance; it's a story about courage and cowardice; it's a story about being victimized by those we trust; it's a story about rising above the most horrific experiences of war and finding a way to go on with life. It's a very good read and hard to put down.
