I've read enough scifi and fantasy that patterns of plots and character developement become familiar. This book like many, sets the scene initially and just doesnt seem to ever get off the ground. Around pg 253 I began skipping ahead, at pg351 I put down the book and havent picked it up since. For people who like development of a world in a story as opposed to plot line this book might be great. I do not know where the "excitement" and other superlatives in the publisher's review are located because I sure as heck didnt find them. I would expect that in a book that spent so much time developing the story line that character development would excel. It didnt. Characters were somewhat wooden and the various story lines tended to blend into one another and just simply become tedious. I've added this author to my "dont bother" list.

WOW
The best book I have read in ages. I couldn't put it down, like the first one (Spirit Gate) I was reading it into the early hours. I have even started to re-read them as I am so impatient waiting for the last one in the series. The plot moves so fast and draws you into the lives of the characters which all intertwine, even though they do not know it. The characters are all so interesting and the story is so unlike anything I have read before.I am afraid to read any other Kate Elliott books in-case I am disappointed, although by the great standard of this book I am sure I won't be.
