During the nineteenth century, however, for reasons which cannot here be discussed, England became fiercely hostile to all literary study or discussion of questions of sex. Whilst elsewhere, and above all in France, Germany, Russia, and Scandinavia, there sprang into existence a new literature, in part fictional, and in part scientific, dealing, under infinite shades of tendency and with an almost maternal care, with the supreme problems of the human sexual life, England appeared to veil its countenance before such problems.
