Jeffrey McCune has entered a world of strong taboos. The black community, like nonblack communities, cultivates a habit of keeping sex and sexuality in place, including the enforcement of a hush-hush about relatives or friends who are that way who are gay. To save face within the black community and society-at-large, many gay black men choose partners who could conceal their sexual perversions, trying to pass as straight while engaging in the sexual politics of discretion (how, and with whom, one chooses to engage in homoerotic desires). McCune s project is about the Down Low (men who engage in homosex but refuse to self-identify as gay) and the underground black subculture that goes with it. In this book, he aims to place private sexual practice among black men in historical context, and also to engage the real, lived experience of this complicated cultural phenomenon. With a focus on the relationship between the ideals of black masculinity and queer sexual desire, McCune unpacks the complex representations of the DL, and shows us how he learned to navigate within the space of Down Low, with its learned codes, terms, and practices."
