Sex, The Illustrated History, Volume I, begins a daring exploration of human sexuality from the ancient to the modern world. Revealed are sexual practices and beliefs previously omitted or obscured from all historical telling. In a scathing condemnation of religion and its control of sex, the book explores complex relationships between spirituality and sexuality. The supremacy of the mother goddess throughout most of human existence, and her relatively recent fall, is detailed in both word and image. These pages share graphic erotic art works and explicit literary excerpts, painstakingly culled from the hidden treasure trove of cultures throughout history. Sex, The Illustrated History, traces sexual attitudes from the transcendent to the bizarre throughout the worlds' cultures. The often explicit illustrations are linked by historical and anthropological content, inviting the reader to experience sexuality through varied and often shocking cultural lenses. Over 300 images have been gathered by the author, in his travels and studies of world cultures. An encyclopedic tour of the sexuality of humankind!

Atemberaubend im Umfang ... Die Welt ist die B¼hne von Professor Gregg.
Gef¼llt mit schockierenden, aber unangreifbaren Fakten ...
Ein neuer gewagter Ansatz ... In jeder Hinsicht ehrlich ...
Breathtaking in scope...The World is professor Gregg's stage.
Filled with shocking but unassailable facts...
A new daring approach.... Honest in every way.... Unafraid to provide graphic illustrations throughout time to illuminate each cultures' approach to sexuality. The pictures are mind blowing. Where the text is deeply explorative , accurate and beautifully written the pictures provide a graphic background for the private sexuality of hundreds of cultures.

This was a most enjoyable read. I became acquainted with Gregg's first book, the original ("Sex, the Illustrated History: Through Time. Religion, and Culture") when it first came out...and have to admit I took advantage of our library as the cost was a bit off-putting...$179. But after enjoying that work, especially the literally hundreds of photographs/artwork that illustrated the text, I was convinced his following books were worth the price and have purchased them all. As I was pursuing some of his later works, I came across a review of the original that that seems totally inappropriate. The writer of the review criticizes it for its lack of academic format...poor editing and what he/she consider inaccuracies. I critically reviewed dozens of entries and found each and everyone to be totally accurate. Perhaps this reviewer didn't like the style that Gregg uses...or his no-holds-barred approach to thoroughly examining how different cultures use religion to thwart women's rights/place in their societies...or perhaps the conclusions that were drawn went against his values or beliefs. Or maybe that person's attitude toward sex...which Gregg examines objectively and not through a glass darkly...offended his culturally shaped tender mercies. I found them absolutely refreshing and ask where in any other publication can one find such a broad overview with such vivid illustrations. To those of you considering purchasing one of Gregg's books, I suggest you ignore this one critical rating that stands out only because it is so different from the others that recognize a truly outstanding work.
