Seven Slayers by Paul Cain celebrates the Black Mask style of writing popular in the thirties and early forties. The stories feature a different "killer" in each, some on the side of the Law, some not. I tracked this book down through finding a sample of Cain's writing in "The Black Lizard Big Book of Pulps" which a compendium/anthology from England.
Cain's style is dark, tersely descriptive, and fast-paced, all requirements for the pulps in those days. I recommend this book as an excellent follow-up to any of Cain's short stories that the reader can find.
