Christian punk was still looking for its Minor Threat when Left Out released the visceral and aggressive Serve Self. Armed with an arsenal of razor-sharp riffs, hoarse vocals, and a touch of heavy metal angst, the music here is some of the toughest and most energetic Christian music committed to album. This approach works marvelously because the message seems so much more important when grafted onto music with such an immediate feel. Their confrontational attitude and overall vibe is simply incredible, making them one of the premier bands in the Christian underground with only one album. The especially angry "High School Prom King Vs. the Phys. Ed. Skins" is a vicious rant about school that comes as a surprise from a band in this genre, while the galloping "Fameless" is their volatile answer to Minor Threat's "In Your Head." Although one might question how effective this is considering how many years have gone by since this genre first existed, Left Out tries very had to make an important statement in 1999.
