Not to be confused with identically titled Doris Day albums on the Sony, Charly, and Musketeer labels, British label Prism's 1996 Sentimental Journey disc, subtitled "16 Very Special Songs," and contains, as a small-print back-cover note puts it, "high quality live concert recordings & radio transcriptions." Indeed, the sound quality for these otherwise unsourced tracks is higher than usual for vintage airchecks. The selections are mostly standards from the 1920s and '30s, among them "Star Dust," "I'm in the Mood for Love," and "My Blue Heaven." The inclusion of a Day cover of the 1946 Sammy Kaye hit "I'm a Big Girl Now" points to the early postwar period as the likely recording date of the tracks. It was around this time that Day left the Lew Brown band, and it would not be surprising to learn that some of these recordings feature it, especially the ones that boast an orchestral backing, such as "Don't Worry 'Bout Me" and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love." The album makes a good alternative to Day's official record releases of the period. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
