His life was little less than a military romance. When 18 years of age, he was a captain in the Union army, and because he talked French fluently he was assigned to the staff of Briga-dier-General Schoepf, who conversed most easily in the Gallic tongue. Albin Schoepf was a Hungarian who had fought with Kossuth and who had subsequently worn a fez in the Turkish army. He delighted to talk of his campaigns in Asia Minor, and found in young Long an eager listener. These narrations filled the youthful captain with a MM longing for Eastern adventure, and at the conAMD elusion of the war of the Rebellion he went HEARD to Egypt. Having acquired a knowledge of the Arabic tongue, he entered the Egyptian army as a lieutenant-colonel and remained in the service of the Khedive for four years, being known to the soldiers as Long Bey. When Chinese Gordon was first named by the Khedive as Governor-General of the equatorial provinces of Africa, Colonel Long, partly on account of his familiarity with both the French and Arabic tongues, was selected to accompany the military expedition as an officer of the Egyptian army and as Gordon's chief-of-staff. In these capacities he accompanied three famous expeditions. First, to the Nile sources; second, to the Niam Niam (pronounce that yam yam) country; third, to the Eastern coast of Africa.
