Even though vocalist Wesla Whitfield was achieving some success for Orrin Keepnews' Landmark label during the late '80s and early '90s, she was also recording for the smaller Cabaret during the same time frame, with Keepnews producing these sessions as well. With husband Mike Greensill serving as her pianist and arranger, along with bassist John Goldsby and drummer Tim Horner, Whitfield delivers one stunning performance after another on this studio session full of gems from the Great American Songbook, including obvious favorites as well as some obscurities. It features her clear tone, impeccable diction, and emotional interpretation of each set of lyrics. "My Favorite Things" is one of Greensill's most interesting charts, an adventurous line that the singer digs into with finesse. Her stark, mesmerizing take of Billy Eckstine's "I Want to Talk About You" and playful romp through Cole Porter's "Come to the Supermarket" are also delightful. Like any CD by Weslia Whitfield, this release is highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
