You are compelled, not simply as my friend Mr. Holyoake would, and has done, to challenge the atonement as an immoral doctrine, but you are compelled to attack the book in which the atonement is pourtrayed and recorded. There are so many who are taught from the beginning, that this book, this Bible is unquestionably true, and it is bolstered up with such an enormous mass of what is alleged to be evidence in its favour, that you are compelled, in order to get at these people at all, in order to put to them that which you consider to be, or which Mr. Holyoake would consider to be Secular truth--you are compelled to raise doubts in their minds as to the value of Christian evidences, and to challenge the foundation of the whole of their religious teachings. Otherwise, you cannot get at them at all. Not only Secular criticism must involve scepticism, but Secular criticism without scepticism would be in effect worse than nothing. And I submit to you the province and the duty of Secular criticism is to shake the theological teachings of the world--to shake them especially in this country in relation to the particular system here taught. But, says Mr. Holyoake, see the position you put yourself in. Tou make enemies of all the Church; you make enemies, not simply of the preachers, because those naturally you expect, but you make enemies of a number of good men, whom, otherwise, you would get to work with you. Permit me to urge here that this is a sad delusion. In putting our principles boldly and fairly out, in challenging, as you must do, that which lies at the root of a great deal of fallacious teaching, you only make enemies of those whose friendship is not worth having, you only make enemies of thos...
