Beginning in the 1950s, geneticist and ophthalmologist Clyde E. Keeler (1900-1994), made lengthy trips to the San Blas Islands, Panama, to study the Cuna Indians who suffered high rates of albinism. A scholar with many interests, in the process of genetic research, Keeler helped the Cuna document their culture. Books he has written includes one on the Cuna alphabet. This volume is based on oral transmissions, often by song, from a quasi priesthood of specialists. An important religious personage is the fertility goddess Olokukurtilisop, or the Great Earthgrandmother, hence the title.
