Paul Russell is a fine writer--just the sort who can be expected to generate writing your Creative Writing Teacher would like. The Coming Storm and The Salt Point are more successful than The Sea of Tranquility. In the Sea of Tranquility, the three characters form a Mom-Dad-Son triad that is going centrifugal. Dad is a fading astronaut who doesn't know what to do with his later life. Mom is the neglected wife who turns to alcohol to solve her neglect problem. Son is a teen unable to make the connection between friendship and sex. In one memorable scene, Son is enjoyably being sodomized by his buddy in the basement, while Mom, aware of what is happening below, is in the living room getting drunk and envying the sexual attention that her son is getting. Many situations are plausible, but after a while, the reader is likely to feel that these characters are doing self-destructive things (predictably, the Son gets HIV) and are not capable of getting help. Their cluelessness is not believable. I threw away my copy
