Before releasing her first album and Grand Jury label debut, The Baby, in August 2020, Samia Finnerty was known to fans not only for her mix of vulnerability and easygoing hooks but for a handful of covers paying tribute to influences like Liz Phair and Daniel Johnston. Samia was in turn covered or remixed by artists including Field Medic, Palehound, and Bartees Strange on The Baby Reimagined in January 2021. Later the same year, Samia returns with a compassionate four-track set, Scout, consisting of three original songs and a cover of When in Rome's timeless earworm "The Promise." Scout's more understated version is performed as a duet with indie soul singer Jelani Aryeh that nevertheless mimics the source material's memorable drum cadence. While the tonally on-point cover closes the EP with feet tapping, the heart of Scout is its two midtempo opening tracks. "As You Are" sets the stage with piano, light drums, and personal voicemails that play under the singer's wistful remembrances and appreciations. The sentiments culminate in a sweetly lyrical chorus that decides, "When somebody loves you/They take you as you are." That song is followed by the equally poignant but grungier "Show Up," which offers similar reflections, this time centered around touring and music life ("We all met in Brooklyn when we were still in bands/And finding a crowd was enough grounds to grandstand/And we knew each other's songs"). The chorus' churning guitars, processed vocals, and reverb give way again to spare piano before the end of the track. The remaining Samia composition, "Elephant," edges toward synth pop while remaining squarely in ruminative territory, both musically and lyrically. Stylistically in line with The Baby, Scout serves as an understated addendum that packs a sentimental punch. ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi
