During his long career, conductor George Szell had only occasional contact with the Berlin Philharmonic. He spent five years in Berlin in the late '20s as first assistant conductor at the Berlin State Opera, but he left Berlin, along with Europe, after the rise of the Nazis and returned only in the late '50s. Between 1957 and his death in 1970, Szell appeared with the Berlin for only a handful of concerts, including this one from June 16, 1969.
