In 2011, they were reissued as the Bamberg Schubert Project, an oblong box set with the Schubert Dialog and Schubert Epilog, two collections of recordings of modern compositions inspired by Schubert's music. For this 2015 Tudor package, the symphonies have been reissued as four hybrid SACDs in a trimline package, and the modernist transcriptions and paraphrases have been jettisoned. Considering the cost of any audiophile box set, this means a savings to collectors who just want the symphonies. Nott's conducting tends to be on the fast side in Schubert, and the Bamberg Symphony is sometimes a little uneven in sound quality. But by and large, they demonstrate a great understanding of Schubert's styles, both in his Classical and Romantic veins, and acquit themselves with enthusiasm and brilliance. The audio of all the...
