These are important documents of the time, and the situation had direct musical ramifications: the music was recorded before an audience of some 60 donors, imparting to Cleveland's Severance Hall a uniquely warm, lively acoustic. Noteworthy, too, is that the release and two companions mark the return to recordings of the Cleveland Orchestra after a long hiatus. Such considerations aside, however, the album is simply an excellent example of Welser-Möst's distinctive style and, perhaps, of why his tenure in Cleveland has been a contentious one, with detractors answered by equally fervent defenders.
