Is Jacobs that much of a household name? Maybe he will be after these Schubert readings, which are distinctive enough to stand out in a crowded marketplace. Historically oriented readings of Schubert's orchestral music, though not exactly common, are hardly unprecedented. The ones here, of a pair of symphonies from Schubert's 19th year, catch the attention with their vibrato-less string sound more than with the winds, which aside from a certain edge, sound pretty modern. The strings may take a little retuning of the ear, but this is easily accomplished. Where Jacobs excels is in the driving readings of both these symphonies, orienting Schubert toward the 19th century to come -- even to Wagner -- rather than back to Mozart and Beethoven.
