The performance is full-blooded and dramatic, with none of the old expressionlessness found in Classical-period music as performed by Baroque orchestras. Jacobs nicely renders the minuets-straining-to-be scherzos in both the Symphony No. 2 in B flat major, D. 125, and Symphony No. 3 in D major, D. 200, giving them the kind of surprising jolt that Schubert's contemporaries would have experienced, and the finale of the Symphony No. 3 is an exciting whirlwind.
