But considering that Schubert himself was probably the greatest melodist of all the great composers, it's equally remarkable how forgettable so much of his sacred music is. Even in these dedicated and deeply musical performances by Wolfgang Sawallisch leading a stellar casts of soloists and musicians, most of Schubert's sacred music remains well-meaning and well-written composition exercises. From the light and lyrical early Mass in G major through the massive and monumental late Mass in E flat major, Sawallisch and his singers and players do their best to bring power and grace and expressivity to Schubert's sacred music, but more often than not the results are dedicated but uninspired.
