It is good to see that middle age has not dulled his sensibilities, especially inasmuch as he tackles here two of the more often recorded piano sonatas of the 19th century, Schubert's Piano Sonata in A major, D. 959, and Piano Sonata in B flat major, D. 960. With plenty of competition, he succeeds in producing readings that stand out. These are Schubert's last two sonatas, and although Schubert had no intention of dying when he wrote them, they are often given a gentle, autumnal tinge. Lim runs entirely counter to type with restless, rhythmically agitated interpretations. He has recorded Rachmaninov and Chopin in the past, and he views Schubert through a late Romantic lens.
