Analyzing such multidimensional aspects makes possible an understanding of the region as a historical cultural landscape and an illustration of its complexity. This anthology, edited by Patrizia Carmassi and Eva Schlotheuber, approaches Northern Germany by focusing on its medieval centers. Castles, palaces and cities as well as religious institutions such as monasteries, priories and (parish) churches were the defining factors in geographic expansion and affiliation. The contributions to this interdisciplinary publication provide insights into the production and exchange of literature, liturgical practice and material culture, the business of writing as well as different types and forms of literary exchange and the significance of regional languages and translation for regional and religious identity. German description: Der norddeutsche Raum ist kein historisch gegebener, eindeutig zu definierender geographischer Raum, sondern wird erst mit Blick auf verschiedene Phanomene wie beispielsweise Sprache, Herrschaft oder Kunst- und Literaturproduktion fassbar. Die Analyse dieser vielschichtigen Aspekte ermoglicht es, eine Region als historische Kulturlandschaft zu begreifen und in ihrer Komplexitat zu veranschaulichen. Der von Patrizia Carmassi und Eva Schlotheuber herausgegebene Sammelband nahert sich dem norddeutschen Raum uber seine mittelalterlichen Zentren. Burgen, Residenzen und Stadte sowie religiose Institutionen wie Kloster, Stifte und (Pfarr-)Kirchen waren bestimmend fur geographische Ausdehnung und Zugehorigkeit. Diese Zentren waren ihrerseits durch ihre Geschichte und ihre Sprache, religiose und literarische Traditionen, Recht und Gewohnheit gepragt, die sie als identitatsstiftende Traditionen in allen verfugbaren Medien in Schrift und Bild, Predigt, Gesang und Dichtung und auch uber die weltliche und geistliche Hofe verbindenden Netzwerke vermittelten. In diesem konkurrierenden Miteinander entstand und entsteht noch heute ein Kulturraum. Die Beitrage des interdisziplinaren Bands erlauben Einblicke in die Produktion und den Austausch von Literatur, in die liturgische Praxis und materielle Kultur, in den Schreibbetrieb und die verschiedenen Wege und Auspragungen literarischer Austauschbeziehungen sowie in die Bedeutung von Regionalsprachen und Ubersetzungen fur regionale und religiose Identitat.
