If you're interested in local color of Brattleboro, VT, "Scent of Evil" is for you. The book is a solid police procedural, as small town police battle a diabolical multiple murderer. However, the book is about 40% too long, unless you like minute detail of the lives of a parade of "red herring" suspects, and unless you care about the topography and history of Brattleboro, VT. Author Archer Mayor is trying to distinguish his Joe Gunther series from the innumerable series of mysteries on the market. His effort is admirable and largely successful. "Scent of Evil" is a good read, and especially a good read for someone who is not in a hurry.
